Director’s note, by Ben Natan
Isolation, distance and alienation can have profound impacts on our social health. They also can dramatically and negatively hinder our ability to engage politically with the rest of the world. Politics and ideology are not something that can healthily grow in isolation. Rather they need cultivation and discipline through community and interaction. Breathing room.
American Theatre and theatre at large has always been a space for politics to breathe and political actors (double entendre thank you very much) to sharpen their ideology. In “Jewish Radicals,” Tony Michels talks about the radical, popular theatre of the 1930s being instrumental in laundering working class politics to the masses and creating popular support for the New Deal Regime.
In the process of rehearsing Macbeth, I’ve felt strongly about creating this breathing room. Engaging these undeniably political plays forces us to analyze our values as they relate to the plight of Shakespeare’s characters.
Once again, I’m grateful to be in a “room” with such compassionate and socially engaged artists. I’m grateful we have this virtual community space to blunt the effect of isolation and distance. I’m glad we can all breathe together.
Honoring the activist roots of theatre and our artists is at the core of No Exit Theatre Collective. We seek to affect change with our work. With each production we put on, the creative team selects a social justice organization to support. Our support comes from our virtual tip jar, which is on Venmo @NoExit-TC.
The director for each show selects an activist organization to support. This week, we’re supporting the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition.
“FRRC is a grassroots, membership organization run by Returning Citizens (Formerly Convicted Persons) who are dedicated to ending the disenfranchisement and discrimination against people with convictions, and creating a more comprehensive and humane reentry system that will enhance successful reentry, reduce recidivism, and increase public safety.”
Ben Natan on why we’re selecting the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition.
“The realization of democracy in America is not possible without mass voter participation. Suppression of the vote has been a feature in our country through gerrymandering, lack of polling availability and outright disenfranchisement through the criminal justice system. Millions of Americans cannot vote due to current or former incarcerated status.
This heinous violation of civic responsibility is so undemocratic, it is hard to believe it is still allowed. And yet, states like Florida are happy to keep millions of people off the rolls until they pay an unsubstantiated and random fine. The Florida Rights Restoration Coalition is a community fund to pay these poll taxes and enfranchise some of the most vulnerable people in the country. If we want a shot at true democracy and popular representation, we need to fight for the right of all Americans to have the power to vote.”
The rest of the tip jar will be split equally among contributing artists on the project. You can support our art by donating to our tip jar, @NoExit-TC on Venmo.
