Director’s note, from resident director Caitlyn McCain
Why are we still producing Romeo + Juliet?
Sadly, because it is still terribly relevant. On the casting sheet for this reading, actors were asked to reflect on where they see the Capulet & Montague divide in their own lives. The examples were countless: political divides, racial divides, familial separations, homophobic relatives and the list goes on. At its core, I see Romeo + Juliet as a warning. A cautionary tale about what happens when hate allows difference to divide us.
Our production begins at the funeral of the two lovers, attended by both Capulets and Montagues. Juliet's parents, Capulet and Lady Capulet, have decided to address the grieving communities with a plea, a heartfelt warning of the tragedy that is still to come if this feud does not end now...
Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life;
Whose misadventur’d piteous overthrows
Doth with their death bury their parents’ strife.
The fearful passage of their death-mark’d love,
And the continuance of their parents’ rage,
Which, but their children’s end, nought could remove,
Is now the two hours’ traffic of our stage;
The which if you with patient ears attend,
What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend.
We can stop producing Romeo + Juliet as soon as we heed the Capulet's warning. As soon as we stop allowing hate to justify our actions. As soon as we stop living in fear of difference. Then, and only then, can we stop producing Romeo and Juliet. Until then, we must keep telling this 400 year old story. We must keep listening, watching, losing, hurting, grieving and (hopefully) learning until this story is representative of our history and not our reality.
Please note that our reading is not attempting to represent any specific divide in our society; we leave that up to your interpretation and experience.
Honoring the activist roots of theatre and our artists is at the core of No Exit Theatre Collective. We seek to affect change with our work. With each production we put on, the creative team selects a social justice organization to support. Our support comes from our virtual tip jar, which is on Venmo @NoExit-TC.
This week, we will be supporting the Right to Counsel NYC Coalition, with 20 percent of the tips from our virtual tip jar. Right to Counsel is a tenant-led coalition formed in 2014, who work towards an eviction-free NYC and ultimately, for a right to housing. In 2017, their work made New York the first city in the country to establish a Right to Counsel for tenants facing eviction.
Director Caitlyn McCain on why we’re selecting the Right to Counsel NYC Coalition.
"Two households, both alike in dignity..."
Every human deserves the dignity of stable housing. Housing is a human right, but 46 percent of New York renters are at risk of eviction. That is 1.5 million New York households. 84 percent of New Yorkers experiencing homelessness identify as Black or Latinx, and one in five Black women experience eviction in their lifetime. The NYC Housing Crisis was only exasperated by COVID and needs our attention now more than ever.
The Right to Counsel NYC Coalition is leading the fight for an eviction-free NYC and providing free legal representation to those facing eviction. Along with Housing Justice For All, RTC is fighting to ensure housing for all.
