Going into Women’s History Month I wanted to focus on a playwright who’s a woman and a friend suggested Storm, Still by Gab Reisman. I immediately fell in love with this take on Shakespeare’s King Lear with it’s distinct language and attitude. In this play, three sisters fall into old and new habits of a backyard play, King Lear, with their own rules in how they play and interact with one another.
The idea that our society would blame women for “daddy issues” before turning to the men who cause these issues rings very true as we work on this reading. This common trope of “broken women with daddy issues” is unpacked and retold in Storm, Still as the sisters figure out how to interact with one another once more, after some time of not seeing each other.
As we worked on this material I fell further in love with the play. This cast’s approach to the material in four days of rehearsal is truly astonishing and a testament to the author’s words and the actor’s talent.
